Why You need a bent shaft paddle
![]() |
Align your wrists. Plain and simple. Save them from unnecessary wear and forget inflamed joints forever. Ask your body and it would tell you never paddle a straight-shaft again. |
Bentshaft kayak paddles have been increasing in popularity in the last fewyears. There are several good reasons
for their success. Their main attribute is the proper
alignment of the wrist, especially as the paddle blade is planted in the water and the joint
loaded with the pull of the blade through the water. This gives the wrists the freedom to do
their job without the unnecessary stresses associated with straight-shaft paddles. Paddlers
feel a reduction in joint related stress and accompanying inflammation and less overall
fatigue of the muscle groups, especially during long days or avid daily paddling. The
cumulative benefits of saving the body from repetetive "wrist-tweeking" can help far more
than just the wrist. All the joints in the arm, including the shoulder, can benefit from this
more natural anatomical positioning.
Many bentshafts, however, have bends
that are not suitable for the recreational
paddler. There are a multitude of ways
bentshaft manufacturers have approached
the problem and the resulting design
differences can be a bit confusing. Most
attempts have too great an angle or akward
configurations and the result is an
uncomfortable feel. All AT bentshafts have
a very subtle, yet accurate, bend
configuration that allows for ergonomic
optimization but still feels very comfortable
and paddles naturally.
Technically speaking, AT bentshafts are
actually "curved shafts" because of the
non-linear complex shape of the gripping
area. Not only is the shaft naturally
achieving the desired angle without harsh
transitions, but the grip has a fully
contoured shape designed to conform to
the closed hand perfectly. This is the
reason AT paddles are so well loved. This
patented grip gives the paddler unparalleled
control and a comfortable feel that is
beyond words. The "Complex Contour
Indexing" allows the paddler to maintain
necessary blade control with a much looser
grip. Or, achieve better control when
needed. The overall effect will transform
any paddler into a believer after only a short
time. Try one!
